Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE REPORTS ON A SEMINAR ORGANIZED BY THE FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM FUR KALTETECHNIK UND WARMEPUMPEN GMBH (REFRIGERATION AND HEAT-PUMP RESEARCH CENTER). SOME DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES ARE NOTED ; EG, R22 IS MUCH MORE COMMONLY USED IN THE US ; R22 USE THERE IS CONCENTRATED IN AIR CONDITIONING AND HEAT PUMPS. ON ANOTHER SUBJECT, WHILE R502 SUBSTITUTES ARE ALREADY SOMEWHAT AVAILABLE, NO CLEAR SUBSTITUTE FOR R22 HAS YET EMERGED. R134A CAN NEVERTHELESS BE USED IN WATER COOLERS WITH SCREW AND SPIRAL COMPRESSORS, AND IN CONVERTING R12 TURBO MACHINES. ESTIMATES ARE GIVEN OF THE CHANGE IN REFRIGERATING CAPACITY AND OPERATING COSTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER-COOLER COMPRESSORS CONVERTED TO R134A. OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED: AMMONIA AS AN R22 SUBSTITUTE, THE USE OF SECONDARY REFRIGERANTS, THE USE OF MIXTURES AS R22 SUBSTITUTES. AMONG THE CONCLUSIONS DRAWN AT THE SEMINAR: CO2 CAN REALISTICALLY REPLACE R22 ONLY IN IN CASCADE INSTALLATIONS. WATER CAN REPLACE R22 ONLY IN AIR CONDITIONING (ABSORPTION). M. C.
