Life Cycle Climate Performance (LCCP) analysis of propane and two HFC blends in direct expansion medium temperature refrigeration systems.

Author(s) : HWANG Y., RADERMACHER R.

Summary

In this paper, the LCCP of R290 and two HFC blends, R410A and R404A, were evaluated for an 11-kW direct expansion medium temperature refrigeration system having the same components except the condenser circuit and the displacemental volume of the compressor. In order to evaluate the system with different refrigerants and optimize the coil circuit that better suits a particular refrigerant, a detailed system model, Genesym, was used. The calculated results show that the COP of R410A and R290 is 5-6 and 3-10% higher than that of R404A. From the LCCP analysis, the findings of the current study are as follows: the LCCP of R404A is always greater than that of the two other refrigerants, R410A; the LCCP of R410A is equal to that of R290 as long as the annual emission is kept; if the annual emission is above 10%, then the LCCP of R290 is the minimum.
