Summary
In 1995, 3 foodborne outbreaks of listeriosis occurred. In 1950, 50 cases were recorded, while in 1982 a total of 10 000 cases occurred. Several hundred cases are now recorded annually. Large-scale Listeria outbreaks are thus relatively recent. Listeriosis is of an exceptional clinical severity and is associated with high mortality. Immunocompromized subjects are particularly prone to listeriosis. The annual incidence is low (4 to 7 cases/million inhabitants) and follows an irregular distribution pattern: it is present in industrialized and apparently does not affect developing countries.
