Summary

Fish freezing began in Japan in 1920, and the sale of frozen fish called "family frozen fish" at department stores started in 1930. Frozen food products had begun about 70-80 years ago. It can be said that the frozen food industry started in 1950 after the war. After this date, production and consumption spread quickly. In 1999, the amount of production reached 1.5 million tons, and total consumption exceeded 2.2 million tons. Japan became the fourth largest country in terms of consumption. From 1950's, it started making a variety of products. It made 3830 kinds of products until 1999. Recently, family use increased, and is 70% for business use and 30% for family use.
