Lower GWP options to replace R-23 for ultra-low temperature transport refrigeration.

Summary
Refrigerant R-23 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) which was adopted as a replacement for the ozone depleting substances (ODSs) R-13 and R-503 in very low temperature refrigeration (-50 °C to -100 °C) in the 1990’s. R-23 is most commonly used in the low temperature stage of cascade refrigeration systems.
R-23 is under significant regulatory pressure due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 14,800. Its use in a critical part of the cold chain and regulators have limited its use to <-50 °C refrigeration systems. Regulators have not taken further action because of the lack of viable alternatives. In addition, the amount used is very small and does not contribute significantly to the total bulk of greenhouse gas emissions.
This paper provides a review of proposed and potential future lower GWP refrigerants as suitable replacements for R-23. A summary of thermodynamic properties and cycle performance, along with flammability, stability, and toxicological properties is provided for proposed alternatives.
