Summary

For Polarbröd in Älvsbyn, Sweden, refrigeration is a vital part of its business. Its success is built on quickly deep freezing freshly baked bread and then transporting it to customers both in Sweden and in other parts of Europe. To ensure that this can be achieved, Polarbröd has invested over 2.4 million euros in a new refrigeration plant over the last couple of years. It has also decades of experience with refrigeration plants using ammonia as refrigerant, and since environmental issues are important to the company, the refrigerant ammonia was the only choice for the new plant. Ammonia also had the benefit being the best economical choice when looking at the running operating costs. The article describes the background of this new plant and how engineers at York Refrigeration, together with the customer Polarbröd, have reasoned. One interesting detail is the replacement of HCFC for the freezers with pump circulated CO2 and recovering heat from the plant by using heat pumps. Environmentally friendly, economical and energy efficient: all three in one package!
