Summary

By the end of 1994 regulations concerning CFC recovery, venting and certification of service technicians and equipment were operating satisfactorily in the USA. Worldwide production of CFCs was decreasing and their use, except for developing nations was reducing significantly. However retrofitting existing systems still lags behind expectations and chaos threatens for some users as supplies cease. Reports continue of new CFCs from developing countries entering the USA disguised as reclaimed refrigerant. R22, accepted by many as an intermediate alternative, is increasing in use. This against a background of worsening ozone depletion and the inevitable phaseout of HCFCs by 2030. D.W.H.
