Summary

The SophiA project provides reliable cooling at three temperature levels +5°C, -30°C and -70°C for rural hospitals and pharmacies in Sub-Sahara Africa. Although these regions are blessed with long hours of sunshine, the electrical infrastructure is based on fossil fuel power plants. The transition to sustainable PV energy is one way of meeting the growing demand for electricity in the future. The SophiA refrigerated container is a role model for a self-sufficient island solution with energy storages. The electricity generated is stored in batteries and in a cold-thermal energy storage (CTES). A propane-CO2 cascade is used as the refrigeration system. To reduce the propane refrigerant charge, a CO2 thermosiphon is installed to charge the CTES. This paper shows the results of the laboratory test. The field test measurements of the first SophiA prototype in Léo are expected in June 2024, Burkina Faso.
