Summary

RESULTS OF SEASON 90/91 INDICATE THAT THE RELATIONSHIP POTASSIUM/CALCIUM IN THE PROXIMAL PART OF THE FRUIT IS A RELIABLE CRITERIA TO PREDICT THE STORAGE POTENTIAL OF PERSIMMONS CV TRIUMPH. DIFFERENT ASSUMPTIONS WERE CONSIDERED TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENT RESULTS AT HARVEST AND AFTER STORAGE: MINERAL MOVEMENT FROM SEPALS TOWARD FRUIT, VARIATION WITHIN THE SAMPLES, DISTRIBUTION OF MINERALS IN DIFFERENT HORIZONTAL SECTIONS OF FRUIT. A HIGH SIGNIFICANT CORRELATION WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE RELATIONSHIP POTASSIUM/CALCIUM IN THE UPPER SECTION OF FRUIT AT HARVEST AND KEEPING QUALITY OF FRUIT. APPLYING THE DEASTRINGENCY TREATMENT DURING THE LAST 10 DAYS OF CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE (30 % CO2, -0.5 DEG C) IMPROVED FRUIT QUALITY IN SHELF LIFE COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL METHOD (2 DAYS ; 80 % CO2, 20 DEG C). MAINTAINING THE < COLD CHAIN > DURING DEASTRINGENCY TREATMENT RESULTED IN 80-90 % FIRM FRUIT AFTER 3-4 MONTHS IN CONTROLLED N < CONVENTIONAL > METHOD. THERMOFOGGING WAS COMPARED WITH DIPPING AND UNTREATED CONTROL.
