Summary
In refrigerated transport, R404A takes a major place with more than 95 % of the load in equipment in service. The new F-gas Regulation N° 517/2014 should lead to the replacement of R404A in transport refrigeration units in the very near future. Given that the average lifespan of such equipment is roughly 10 to 12 years in Europe, transporters will not be able to replace all units in line with the phase-out resulting directly or indirectly from the F-gas Regulation and its objective to ban HFCs with a GWP over 2500.
Manufacturers have prepared these changes but certainly not anticipated such a rapid phase down. Some new solutions using cryogenic fluids or absorption have been developed and proposed on the market for some years now. They are interesting for specialized applications, but not covering all the range of applications. Units using natural refrigerants are being developed, but it will take some years to replace all in service units. They have also conducted research in order to use HFCs and blends with a GWP of less than 2500 that have the same performance and do not require replacement of the units or components, and can thus be used as drop-in solutions to replace R404A in the short term, in existing and new units, while awaiting lasting alternatives.
Following analysis of the context of F-gas in refrigerated transport, this presentation will analyse the potential impact of the F-gas. It will then describe the different solutions available such as CO2 or cryogeny, in tests such as R452A HFC’s blend, under development such as absorption, or that could be imagined in a near or longer future.
