Summary

This report from the HFC and PFC Task Force of the TEAP (Technology and Economic Assessment Panel) provides information on available and potential ways and means of limiting emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs), including their use as replacements for ozone depleting substances. It analyses the consequences for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol of the inclusion of HFCs and PFCs in the basket of gases to be controlled in the Kyoto Protocol. The use of HFCs and PFCs as alternatives for ozone depleting substances in various sectors is investigated: aerosol products; refrigeration and air conditioning; halon, solvent and foam; military applications. The notion of LCCP (Life-Cycle Climate Performance) is introduced.
