Summary

ALTHOUGH THE DISADVANTAGES OF TOTAL LOSS REFRIGERANTS ARE POOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND HIGH OPERATING COST, THERE ARE SOME SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE ADVANTAGES OF LOW CAPITAL INVESTMENTS, LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS AND OTHER OPERATIONAL FACTORS MAKE THIS TECHNIQUE WORTHWHILE. THIS TECHNIQUE IS IN WIDE USE TODAY FOR THE REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT OF PERISHABLE FOODSTUFFS AND A WIDE RANGE OF EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE TO USERS. THE PAPER DEALS ESSENTIALLY WITH APPLICATIONS CONCERNING IN-TRANSIT REFRIGERATION USING LIQUID NITROGEN AND SOLID OR LIQUID CARBON DIOXIDE AS TOTAL LOSS REFRIGERANTS.
