Thermal machines using wind energy from cold polar wind.

Machines thermiques utilisant l'énergie du vent froid polaire.

Summary

Until now, wind energy has mainly been used for its propulsive power (sailing boats, windmills) and drying power (cereal drying, etc). The cooling power of wind, the temperature of which is lower than the temperature of a reference medium (sea, river, waste fluid), has seldom been used. Analyzing weather data from 5 Antarctic sites, the authors show that the enthalpy and exergy fluxes available from these thermal dipoles can largely exceed the pure kinetic energy of the strongest wind. As practical examples of systems able to use this "free" wind exergy, they describe a thermo-mechanical machine for electricity production and an original multi-stage absorption heat pump for space heating. They discuss the technical problems posed by polar environments.
