Summary

AN EXPERIMENTAL TRANSPORT IN A 40 FT MECHANICALLY REFRIGERATED CONTAINER OF PEACHES, APRICOTS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, MELONS, GREEN BEANS, LETTUCE, SWEET PEPPERS AND SUMMER SQUASHES WAS CARRIED OUT. THE DURATION OF THE VOYAGE WAS 7 DAYS AND THE TIME FROM HARVEST TO SALE WAS 13-15 DAYS. BEFORE SHIPMENT, THE PEACHES AND MELONS WERE HYDROCOOLED WHILE THE OTHER PRODUCE WERE PRECOOLED IN AIR. THE PEACHES, PLUMS, APRICOTS, CHERRIES, AND MELONS WERE PACKED IN PALLETS COVERED WITH POLYETHYLENE AND TREATED WITH A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF CO2 TO SLOW DOWN THE RIPENING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF GRAY AND BROWN MOULD ROT.
