Summary

The freeze tolerance of Undaria pinnatifida gametophytes in liquid nitrogen (-196 deg C) in the presence of glycerol, was studied. The gametophytes present a different survival rate depending on immersion temperature in liquid nitrogen and thawing rate. If they were placed in liquid nitrogen after cooling to -30 deg C, none developed with slow thawing, but 50% of them recovered normal growth with rapid thawing. For an immersion after a stage at -40 deg C, some gametophytes showed a merismatic recovery after slow thawing; this recovery is general if thawing is rapid. The glycerol concentrations used (5 to 30%) made no difference.
