Binary ice: technologies for the production of pumpable ice-slurries.

Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
Binary ice (trade mark) is a mixture of water and ice crystals of 0.1 to 0.5 millimeter size. The mixture behaves as a "Bingham" fluid in that normal thermodynamic rules no longer apply. Pressure drop can be less than that for pure water above velocities of about 2 m/s. Flow is neither laminar nor turbulent and no boundary layer appears to form. With ice concentration of 40%, the cooling capacity is about 700% greater than pure water with a range of 6 deg C. As a secondary coolant, pipe sizes can be reduced, pumping costs are less, and final heat exchange surfaces are smaller. The paper describes two methods of producing binary ice, one by scraping crystals off a refrigerated surface, the other by water evaporation at triple point conditions. Also a number of successful applications are described. D.W.H.
