Summary

The paper tabulates the refrigerants at present used and future substitutes for four broad categories of refrigeration application, industrial, transport, large retail and domestic. The choice of best substitute is then argued. Conclusions suggest ammonia with indirect cooling for many large systems, including retail. Supermarkets could be operated with factory-packaged, single-stage compressor units, providing a cascade system is adopted for freezer temperatures. For low temperature transport, possibly R134a with a totally sealed system, or a more efficient use of liquid nitrogen. R134a is the likely choice for domestic freezers and refrigerators. As most blends contain R22, they are not suitable for use beyond the early years of the 21st century. D.W.H.
