Choosing substitute refrigerants for household refrigerators.

Type of article: Article
Summary
Selecting substitute refrigerants for household refrigerators requires the study of several groups of factors, including thermodynamic, technical, economic, technological and safety. These are presented, and an optimum system is proposed. The results of this operation are compared for each factor and for each of three groups of substitutes: HFCs (R134a), hydrocarbons and fluorocarbon compounds (R218 and others). None of these fluids is the ideal substitute for R12, and a particular fluid must be chosen for the application at hand.
