Controlled atmosphere transportation.

Author(s) : BISHOP D. J.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The development of controlled atmosphere in the transport of perishables is reviewed and the benefits discussed. Modern technology using membrane nitrogen generators or pressure swing systems reduces oxygen levels to between 1 and 5%. Measurement and control of the gas composition is important requiring automatic calibration and intelligent decision making using computers. The author suggests that the use of controlled atmosphere at sea will increase and proposes that further investigations on storage life be made using this type of atmosphere control. G.R.S.
