Design criteria for heat pumps and refrigerating plants with ammonia and flammables as working fluids.

Summary

The paper describes the essential design criteria when using ammonia and flammables as working fluids in heat pumps and refrigerating plants. For demonstration purposes, two different heat pumps are built. Propane heat pump at Skarsetlia Church, Lillehammer: the ground coupled heat pump has a heat output of 45 kilowatts. The heat pump is installed in a separate building outside the church, and it has been in operation since September, 1993. Ammonia heat pump at Hedmark Regional College, Rena: ground water is used as low temperature heat source, and the heat capacity is 200 kilowatts. The heat pump is installed in the basement of the school building, close to the main entrance. The heat pump was installed in spring 1994.
