A SPEECH GIVEN AT THE 26TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE US NATIONAL FROZEN FOOD ASSOCIATION HIGHLIGHTS THE PROGRESS MADE OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS IN FOOD FREEZING AND DISTRIBUTION. IN RELATION TO WAREHOUSE FREEZER CAPACITY, 889 MILLION CUBIC FEET IN 1973 ROSE TO 1.2 BILLION CUBIC FEET IN 1983. SOME FIGURES ARE GIVEN FROM A SUPERMARKET PROFITABILITY STUDY AND IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT FOR A 25% INCREASE IN FROZEN FOOD SALES, THE NET PROFIT INCREASE IS 54.5%. WORK IS IN PROGRESS TO IMPROVE THE FROZEN FOOD DISTRIBUTION CHAIN BY ADOPTING < MODULARIZATION >, IE GETTING THE BEST SURFACE UTILIZATION OF THE STORAGE OR TRANSPORT MEDIUM, SUCH AS A PALLET, AND STANDARDIZING CASE SIZES AND PALLET PATTERNS.
