Summary

The paper presents the performance of ethane (HC-170) as an alternative refrigerant in the low stage of a two-stage cascade refrigeration, with R-22 as the high stage refrigerant. The energetic performance as well as operating conditions of R-22/HC-170 system were compared with a system that used R-22/HFC-23. System performance is based on the refrigeration capacity and compression power. Compression power of HC-170 shows greater value compared to HFC-23; however, it has also greater refrigerant capacity. As the low stage evaporation pressure ranges from 1.1 to 2.8 bars, the R-22/HC-170 system shows 0.23 to 0.37 higher COPs.
