Experimental performance of a cascade refrigeration system using ethane (HC-170) as a low stage refrigerant.

Author(s) : RAHADIYAN L., KIM Y. G., SHIN Y. S., et al.

Summary

This paper presents the performance of ethane (HC-170) as an alternative refrigerant in the low stage of a two-stage cascade refrigeration, with R-22 as the high stage refrigerant. The energetic performances as well as operating condition of R-22/HC-170 system are compared to a system that used R-22/HFC-23. As the low stage evaporation pressure ranges from 1.3 to 2.2 bars, the R-22/HC-170 system shows 0.23-0.37 higher COPs. Furthermore, in the same range, evaporation temperature of ethane is about 1 0.5°C lower than HFC-23.
