IN 1984, CULTIVATION IN JAPAN WAS 20,000 HA AND 500,000 T IN PRODUCTION. FOUR PREDOMINANT CULTIVARS, SUCH AS NIJISSEIKI, KOSUI, CHOJURO, AND HOSUI OCCUPIED 31, 20, 15 AND 12% OF CULTIVATED AREA RESPECTIVELY. FRUITS ARE SUPPLIED FROM END OF JULY USING THE FILM-COVERED ORCHARD, UNTIL NEXT SPRING BY COOL STORAGE. AT THE NORTHERN JAPAN, THE RUSSETAL SKIN TYPE CULTIVARS (KOSUI, HOSUI, CHOJURO) AND, AT THE SOUTH, GREEN SKIN TYPE (NIJISSEIKI) AREPREFERRED RESPECTIVELY. HARVESTING, PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS, STORAGE AND PROCESSING ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. INCREASES OF EXPORT AND THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OUTSIDE JAPAN INDICATED THAT THIS PEAR HAD A POTENTIAL TO BECOME A MAJOR FRUIT CROP.
