High temperature conditioning of "Fortune" mandarins to reduce chilling injury during low-temperature storage.

Summary

Storage of "Fortune" mandarins at temperatures below 9 deg C causes chilling injury. Conditioning at 35 deg C, 95-100% relative humidity, for 72 hours reduces these disorders during storage at 5 deg C. This conditioning also reduces weight loss and the essential oil content. After 4 weeks storage at 9 deg C, 90% relative humidity, weight loss and softening are excessive. At this temperature the application of polyethylene wax increases the storage life by two weeks. Conditioning maintains the quality of mandarins during 8 weeks storage at 5 deg C.
