Summary

In the context of the COVID-19 health crisis, 80 °C refrigeration highlighted the need for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly freezers for preserving mRNA vaccines. Currently, these systems are transiting from R-404A/R-23 to R-290/R-170 basic two-stage cascade vapour compression systems without exploring the potential of low global warming potential working fluids in advanced configurations. This paper explores the potential of liquid and vapour injection two-stage cycles in the high and low stages of cascades to enhance the freezer s coefficient of performance. Therefore, twenty combinations have been explored, using R-290 in high temperature and R-170 in low temperature. The highest coefficient of performance, around 1.2, is
reached by the vapour injection in the low stage of the cascade.
