Summary
From an environmental viewpoint it is preferable to use substances which are naturally present in the biosphere and have demonstrated their harmlessness, provided that they are otherwise suitable as refrigerants. For the conventional refrigeration temperature range, -50 to 10 deg C, three well known and proven candidates exist: ammonia, propane and CO2. The choice between them depends on the characteristics of the application. New technical developments open possibilities of improvements in performance, using these refrigerants and CO2 in particular.
