Near-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures as potential drop-in substitutes for R502.

Summary

A series of tests compared the system performance of low-temperature R502 with two near-azeotropic mixtures, R22-FC218-GC290 (55-39-6%) and R22-FC218-HC290 (74-20-6%). The tests were carried out in a well-instrumented water-water heat pump test facility using an open-drive reciprocating compressor and counterflow heat exchangers. Measurements were conducted at two different condensing temperatures. The refrigerant evaporating temperature, the refrigerant superheat at the evaporator outlet, the inlet temperature to the compressor, and the degree of liquid subcooling at the condenser outlet were considered. Test data were used to compare important compressor performance characteristics including shaft power, volumetric efficiency, pressure ratio, and compressor discharge temperature. System performance characteristics were also measured.
