Packaged ammonia chillers in the cold chain.

Author(s) : LAMB R., PEARSON A.

Summary

This paper describes a new style of packaged glycol chiller which has been developed in order to offer ammonia systems at lower capital cost and across a wide range of applications. The chiller is air-cooled and is factory commissioned and tested on load before delivery to site. Three case studies are detailed. The first describes the use of the ammonia chillers on a glycol system for a chill distribution centre. The second case study is the use of the same style of chiller to provide chilled water to a department store in a large shopping mall. In the third case study the chillers provide process water cooling in a food factory. The paper provides an overview of the design concept and describes how the chillers meet the requirements of existing safety codes. Comparison of capital cost, operating cost and carbon footprint is made with other alternative solutions. In conclusion, the paper identifies when this approach to cooling for the cold chain is appropriate and when it is not.
