Summary

MORE THAN 70 PERCENT OF US BEEF IS DISTRIBUTED IN CORRUGATED BOXES WHICH SLOW THE FREEZING RATE OF BEEF FROZEN AFTER BOXING. MAXIMUM ENERGY EFFICIENCY WAS ATTAINED WHEN GROUND BEEF WAS FROZEN AT 244 K (-29 DEG C) WITH AIR VELOCITY AT 3 MPS IN A 508-BY 406-BY 127-MM FULL-TELESCOPE STYLE BOX. ENERGY SAVINGS UP TO 48 PERCENT WERE OBTAINED BY USING THE OPTIMAL COMBINATION OF BOX, TEMPERATURE, AND VELOCITY. ADDITION OF HANDHOLES IN THE BOXES DECREASED ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR FREEZING THE MEAT BY 6 PERCENT. NOMOGRAPHS WERE DEVELOPED.
