Propane and CO2 two "natural" alternatives.

Summary

Propane (R290) is presently an excellent choice. COPs of propane are higher than that of R22. A further advantage of R290 is the low discharge temperature; even high temperature lifts can be realized with one-stage systems. The danger caused by propane equipment is relatively low. The other "natural" refrigerant is CO2: CO2 is a "safety refrigerant", non-toxic and non-flammable. However, for heat pump applications with condensing temperatures exceeding 30 deg C the super-critical cycle with pressures up to 200 bar as proposed by Lorentzen has to be used. In the case where the temperature glide at the heat sink side can be utilized, CO2 offers high COPs and low pressure ratios; equipment for CO2 cycles has to be developed.
