Summary

A THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION WAS PERFORMED IN ORDER TO FIND OUT THE MOST SUITABLE PROPANE DERIVATIVES TO BE USED IN VAPOUR COMPRESSION REFRIGERATION CYCLES. AMONG 116 PROPANE DERIVATIVES WITH KNOWN NORMAL BOILING TEMPERATURES, ONLY 9, INCLUDING PROPANE ITSELF (R290), WERE CONSIDERED, BECAUSE THEIR NORMAL BOILING TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM 233 TO 273 K (FROM -40 TO 0 DEG C). NONE INCLUDE CHLORINE OR BROMINE ATOMS, EXCEPT R218 (PERFLUOROPROPANE), ALL INCLUDE HYDROGEN ATOMS AND CAN THEREFORE BE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT. IN GENERAL, THEY SHOW A LOW LEVEL OF TOXICITY, BUT ARE INFLAMMABLE, EXCEPTING R218. A SCREENING WAS CARRIED OUT, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE COP AND THE REFRIGERATING VOLUMETRIC EFFECT OF THE REFRIGERATION CYCLE. THE THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF THE FLUIDS WERE DEDUCED FROM THE REDLICH-KWONG-SOAVE GAS EQUATION. ONLY FOUR FLUIDS (R290, R245, R227 AND R227A) ARE COPS ARE STILL LOWER THAN THOSE OF R12 AND R22, AND ONLY R290 HAS A FAVOURABLE REFRIGERATING VOLUMETRIC EFFECT. E. F.
