AGRICULTURE CANADA HAS STUDIED THE POTENTIAL FOR USING WINTER COLD TO SUPPLY REFRIGERATION IN FOOD PROCESSING: DIRECT VENTILATION OF COOLERS, CHILLING ROOMS AND CUTTING ROOMS IN A MEAT PACKING PLANT ; MODIFICATION OF MECHANICAL REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WINTER COLD ; AND BUILDING OF ICE BLOCKS DURING THE WINTER FOR PRECOOLING OF VEGETABLES AT HARVEST. CONSIDERABLE SAVINGS IN ELECTRICAL ENERGY CAN BE REALIZED. COSTS OF INSTALLATION ARE HOWEVER QUITE HIGH.
