Summary

CHANGES IN PHOTOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY OF ISOLATED PEA CHLOROPLASTS WERE STUDIED UPON FREEZING. THE ACTIVITY OF CHLOROPLASTS WAS FOUND TO DECREASE ON FREEZING WITH THE CRYOINJURY BEING MORE PRONOUNCED DURING SLOW FREEZING. SUCROSE IN A 0.2 M CONCENTRATION APPEARED TO EXERT A CRYOPROTECTIVE EFFECT WHICH INCREASED THE ACTIVITY WITH BOTH FREEZING THE EFFECT WAS MORE PRONOUNCED UPON SLOW FREEZING. 10 % GLYCEROL HAD A SIMILAR CRYOPROTECTIVE EFFECT.
