The replacement of HCFC22 in refrigeration systems.

Summary

The object of this work is to examine the effects of replacing R22 with a mixture of R134, R125 and R32 in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It is demonstrated that retrofitting systems currently operating with R22 is a difficult and time consuming process. Nevertheless, despite the difficulties encountered, it is demonstrated that it is not recommended that new R22 compressors be charged with polyolester compressor lubricants suitable for HFCs. The performance of a typical blend of R134a, R125 and R32 is then discussed, with special emphasis on the effect of differential solubility of these refrigerants in a particular polyol ester compressor lubricating oil.
