Effect of wrapping and stem waxing on the postharvest quality changes of pear cv. "Deveci" grown under Adana ecological conditions.

Author(s) : AGAR I. T., KASKA N., AKAVCI N.

Summary

In the research, the combined effect of wrapping single pears and waxing the stem end, in comparison to bulk stored fruits was tested. Pears were harvested, selected and their stems were waxed. After waxing the stems, pears were wrapped in thin paper and placed in a store with 0 deg C and 85-90 relative humidity and analysed monthly for the following quality parameters: total soluble solids (%), titratable acidity (g malic acid/100 g), fruit juice pH, fruit flesh firmness, conversion of starch to sugar, weight loss (%), ethylene production, physiological and fungal disorders. According to the authors' results, Deveci pear variety can be stored as long as 6-7 months. Wrapping single fruits and waxing the stem end reduces the weight loss and preserves the external and internal quality significantly in comparison to pears which were neither waxed nor wrapped.
