Replacement refrigerants for water chillers.
Author(s) : MACLAINE-CROSS I.
Summary
The Montreal Protocol requires that large water chillers cease using R11, R22 and R123. Comparing thermodynamic and transport property parameters for these, R134a, R290, R601, R601a, R717 and pentafluoroiodoethane avoids certain errors and biases. The parameters for R717 (ammonia) offer energy savings about 20%. R290 or R717 can replace R22. The pentane mixture R601/R601a (50/50) with an electronic 38% rotor speed increase can economically replace R11.
