SAFETY IN INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION.

Author(s) : LINDBORG A.

Summary

DURING THE POST-WAR PERIOD, INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES REINFORCED REGULATIONS ON THE SAFETY OF REFRIGERATING EQUIPMENT SUCH AS PRESSURE VESSELS. THE USE OF HAZARDOUS REFRIGERANTS, MAINLY AMMONIA, WAS STRICTLY LIMITED. DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS THE HAZARDS OF CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS (CFCS) HAS AROUSED INCREASING INTEREST ; ONE OBSERVED THE HARMFUL EFFECTS ON HEALTH, THE DEPLETION OF THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE LAYER AND THE INCREASE IN ECOLOGICAL HAZARDS. THESE EFFECTS REVEAL THE NEED FOR MORE STRINGENT REGULATIONS. DURING THE SAME PERIOD A CONTINUING INTEREST HAS DEVELOPED FOR ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND IT MAY BE THE OBJECT OF NEW REGULATIONS IN THE FUTURE.
