Summary

The DEFT-APC screening method for the detection of irradiated food is based on comparative counts of bacteria within a food using two microbiological enumeration methods, namely the direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT) and an aerobic plate count (APC). It was reported that the DEFT-APC method could be used to detect foods irradiated with doses of 5 kilograys or higher and subsequently stored chilled or frozen. A minimum of five laboratories will take part in a trial and evaluate the DEFT-APC method as a screening method to detect irradiated, frozen stored minced beef, beef, chicken, cod and prawns.
