New refrigerants and sustainable refrigerant management for cold chain. Current situation in Japan and future aspect.

Summary

Refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems are indispensable to our civilized society. However, discharged fluorocarbon refrigerants from these systems and exhausted carbon dioxide during operating these systems cause global environmental issues including ozone depletion and global warming. For alleviating the global issues, new refrigerants with lower GWP and higher cycle performance must be developed. In this paper, Japanese current status and some of future aspects of the refrigerants for cold chain are introduced. To operate these systems and to use the refrigerants effectively, new systems with natural refrigerant and those with new refrigerant; e.g., domestic refrigerators using isobutene, industrial chillers using hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), condensing units using carbon dioxide, must be constructed. It is also important to establish total refrigerant management with promotions of replacement, reclamation, and recycled refrigerants. In this paper, based on consideration of some proceeding measures in Japan, new cycles are proposed and their performances with low GWP refrigerants are calculated.
