Refrigerants: it's transition time.

Fluides réfrigérants : le temps de la transition.

Type of article: Article, Review

Summary

A key trend addressed by thermodynamic equipment specialists over the past 20 years was the replacement of CFC and HCFC by HFCs. This trend was made necessary by the need to adress ozone-depletion and greenhouse gas issues initially raised during UN conferences on climate change in Montreal in 1987 and Kyoto in 1997. This transition has just been achieved, and the phase-out of HFCs and their replacement with low-GWP refrigerants is now scheduled. What solution should now be adopted for new systems? Which path should be followed? Should we wait until industrail stakeholders have come up with a new solution? Rather than trying to give a direct answer, this article attempts to provide an overview of this complex issue which will take several years to address.
