Summary

This manual was funded with support from the Leonardo Da Vinci agency and is the outcome of the EU-funded project "NARECO2" (short for NAtural REfrigerant CO2") that has brought together seven partners from all over Europe to share knowledge and spread best practice among the public. The manual, initially designed to be a training tool for installers, teachers, and students, has grown into a 500-page document about the use of CO2 (R744) in cooling, refrigeration, and heating. It provides practical and structured information on how to install, size, and maintain such a system, but also serves as a very complete guide for industry and policy decision makers wanting to learn more about natural refrigerants' potential today and in the future. The book, presented at the international conference for natural refrigerants "Atmosphere 2009", attracted great interest among industry and policy representatives meeting in Brussels. Topics covered: thermodynamic topics (role of the throttling valve on the transcritical cycle; methods for improving the energy efficiency of carbon dioxide transcritical cycles); industrial systems (general system design; industrial CO2 refrigeration system; ice-cream freezer; plate freezer; transcritical plant design: applied from supermarket refrigeration; cases: large transcritical systems);commercial refrigeration; CO2/R744 mobile air conditioning (MAC); CO2 heat pumps; safety and leakages control; drivers for implementation of CO2 technology; components.
