Refrigerant report 2. The future has already begun.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

This is a comprehensive report on substitute refrigerants for CFCs and for HCFCs. A formula is given for the total greenhouse effect (included CO2 caused by energy production). Substitutes are tabulated for R12, R502 and R22 both for transitional use and looking beyond R22 phase out. For many blends, "R" numbers are given against trade names. Problems are discussed, both for new plants and retrofitting existing systems concerning safety, materials, lubricants and plant design. The range of blends, both azeotropic and zeotropic at present available are considered. References include a German manufacturer's literature on conversion methods. Experience with substitutes for R22 is limited, but suggestions are made. The design problems when using ammonia or PROPANE are highlighted. The booklet ends with physical and thermodynamic properties tabulated for all refrigerants discussed. D.W.H.
